Sam and Vincent Finish Second in 2009 Badminton Team USA Trials

Sameera Gunatileka and Vincent Nguy from Maryland traveled to the Bay Area on New Year’s Day hoping to become part of the US team to various  continental and/or BWF adult team competition in 2009.  They participated in the 2009 GGBC USA Badminton (USAB) Team USA Trials, which ranked the top eight national players/teams for the five events (MS, WS, MD, WD, MX).  The event was held on January 2nd-4th, 2009 at the Golden Gate Badminton Club. Sam and Vincent placed second in the men’s doubles event, right behind the 2005 World Champions Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach, who won all their matches by wide margins.  Finishing third in this event was another Northeast player, Ted Shear and his partner James Young.  Ted also finished third in men’s singles after beating top ranked Nicolas Jinadasa in an exciting 3 game match.  Ted is currently a coach at GGBC.   It is also interesting to note that Vincent and Rulan Yeh placed 5th while Sam and Rulien Yeh placed 7th in mixed doubles.
