Seven Northeast Juniors Participate in 2009 Pan Am Junior Championships
Team USA brought home the gold for the Team Event involving 12 countries at the XVII Pan American Junior Championships held in Puerto Rico on August 17th to 23rd.  Rachel Liao from Maryland was part of the four men and four women USA team.  She and her girls doubles partner played the women's doubles matches against Guyana, Puerto Rico and Jamaica and won.

Team USA also performed better than any other country in the individual event that involved seven from the Northeast Region: Rachel Liao U19 and Bobby Huang U11 from Maryland; Philip Donlon U17, Lee Churn U17, Alan Shekhtman U15, Zandra (CC) Ho U15 and Darren Yang U13 from Massachusetts.  The Northeast participants brought home five medals:

Philip Donlon and Lee Churn, U17 boys doubles, bronze
Zandra Ho, U15 girls singles, gold
Alan Shekhtman and Zandra Ho, U15 mixed doubles, silver
Darren Yang and partner, U13 boys doubles, gold
Darren Yang, U13 boys singles, bronze

These juniors earned their slots to participate in the PanAm Junior Championships during the 2009 Junior International Trials held in the Bay Area during the February President's Day weekend.  In San Juan, Puerto Rico, they all enjoyed the camaraderie of more than 50 other players from the USA as well as those from other countries, mostly staying at the luxurious beachfront hotel, the Caribe Hilton.
